Couture Fashion Week: Spring/Summer 2014

February 05, 2014

Couture Fashion Week, 19th-24th January, showcased the world's finest haute couture. The 2014 Couture Fashion Week was, as is tradition, held in Paris, with Atelier Versace, Christian Dior, Chanel, and Valentino, as some of the main shows.

At Atelier Versace, Donatella opened couture fashion week with Grace Jones' inspired hoods, amidst swathes of silk and dyed fur. There were jumpuits and suits, long and short dresses, all the while keeping the sensual femininity that is Versace. Lady Gaga sat in the front row, hooded herself, with her new song "Donatella" on the soundtrack.

Raf Simons focused on youth when designing his Spring/Summer 14 couture collection at Christian Dior. The pieces had a free feeling, with tailored trousers and bustier tops, his signature, and dresses with pockets. A$AP Rocky was one of many celebrities front row at the show.

At Chanel, Karl Lagerfeld triumphed once again. Karl emphasised the waist, through cropped jackets and low cut skirts. The collection was very sporty, with elbow and knee pads, and trainers-this seasons go-to shoe. Cara Delevingne, who opened the show, was the Chanel bride, with Hudson Kroenig as her paige-boy. The models skipped and twirled down the stairs to Sebastian Tellier and his orchestra, their hair spiked and eyes bejewelled. Tilda Swinton and Lily Allen were two of many celebrities front row at the show.

The Valentino collection was the definition of couture. Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pierpaolo Piccioli's layered tulle dresses and ballerina styles were beautifully light and intricately detailed, with animal prints and patterns. Florence Welch attended the show, also adorned in butterflies.
