Dior Hires First Female Creative Director and Everything Else You've Missed

July 22, 2016

The past year or so has been pretty traumatic for the fashion industry (and the rest of the world for that matter...but we won't get into that). Major changes have been underway in some of the world's most influential fashion houses, with creative directors switching places in a pretty complex game of musical fashion chairs.
Rumours have been flying, leaving the fashion world reeling, so I'm here to sum up everything you need to know.

Fact
  • Alexander Wang leaves Balenciaga, after a short run as creative director, in July 2015
  • Raf Simons leaves Dior in October 2015, leaving a gaping hole in his place for over half a year

  • Alber Elbaz is pushed out of Lanvin after 14 years, only seven days later
  • Demna Gvasalia replaces Wang as Balenciaga's creative director in October
  • Bouchra Jarrar is appointed creative director of Lanvin in March
  • Hedi Slimane steps down from Saint Laurent in April 2016, after an influential three years as creative director, during which he even rebranded the powerful fashion house
  • Anthony Vaccarello is soon announced as the next creative and image director of Saint Laurent
  • Francisco Costa and Italo Zucchelli leave Calvin Klein in April, as the house plans to join the men's and women's brands under a single creative director
  • Maria Grazia Chiuri replaces Simons as the long awaited creative director of Dior in June 2016
  • Pierpaolo Piccioli remains at Valentino as the sole creative director, having worked as a pair with Chiuri for over 25 years
  • Peter Copping leaves Oscar de la Renta in July, for personal reasons, despite having been selected as creative director by the designer himself before his death in 2014
Fiction
  • Rumours that Karl Lagerfeld was set to leave Chanel were swiftly shut down in April. Personally, I don't think the iconic designer will ever step down, regardless of his (apparently) 82 years of age
  • Subsequently, the rumour that Hedi Slimane was due to replace Lagerfeld at the head of Chanel was shut down pretty speedily
  • Raf Simons may be taking the reins at Calvin Klein, in August, although the rumours have yet to be officially confirmed (or denied...)
  • Nicolas Ghesquière is not leaving Louis Vuitton, despite rumours, as he has until November 2018 to complete his contract as creative director
